Well, we did not have a good day today. In fact, we spent a good part of it in the ER.
On Wednesday, Ava had a playdate with a little girl who came down with the flu the next day. So Ava was definitely exposed to it. Of course, about an hour after I found this out (this was yesterday), she started running a fever. It continued through the night and we all had a HORRIBLE night’s sleep!
This morning, we were debating whether or not the fever was high enough to take her in to the ER when she decided to fall off our bed. I was downstairs making her bottle so she could take a nap and Chad was watching her. She decided to throw her nuk off the bed and dive after it and Chad couldn’t catch her in time. It started swelling immediately even though I put a bag of frozen corn on it (which made her cry even more). I called our Ask a Nurse line and told them about both of her problems and the nurse I talked to was leaning toward telling me to just keep an eye on everything until he asked how big the bump was. I told him it was 1.5 – 2 inches. He asked if I was sure it was over an inch in diameter and I said yes, it definitely was. So then he told me we should go to the ER.
So we did….we waited for about 3 hours just to see a stupid nurse practicioner (no, we didn’t even get to see a DOCTOR!!) who was more concerned with giving a nurse child-rearing advice right outside our room for 5 minutes before she came in than she was with our baby. She basically just glanced at the bump, asked if she lost consciousness at all, and then said the bump was fine. Then she said the flu test was negative, checked Ava’s ears (she didn’t even let me put her down on the table to check her ears….which resulted in me holding Ava and her practically pinning both of us up against the wall so she could look in her ears) and said to control the fever with ibuprofen or tylenol (which I was already doing). She didn’t even check her mouth or throat or nose or anything. I’m very skeptical about the results of that flu test…it’s just too coincidental that she was exposed to a confirmed case of the flu on Wednesday, came down with something that involved a high fever on Friday, and it’s not the flu?? Needless to say, I’m definitely making an appointment with Ava’s doctor first thing on Monday to make sure everything really is OK.
So that was how we spent our Saturday.
