Ava’s Potty-Training Journey – 6/29/09
I decided tonight that I’m going to start potty training Ava tomorrow. She’s been showing readiness signs for awhile and I’ve made a few efforts, but I keep waiting for a perfect, uninterrupted stretch of time to potty train and I finally realized that’s never going to happen. So tomorrow we’re getting serious!
As it stands, my plan is to just put her on the potty every 30 minutes or so and have her try to go. The last time I tried potty-training her, I waited for her to tell me she had to go and she never did, so we’re going to try it this way instead. I think we’re going to reward her with gummy bears when she goes, so hopefully that will be a good motivation for her. We may do a sticker chart, too.
I have 4 pairs of cloth training pants and I’m not sure if that will be enough. I’ve never potty-trained before, so I have no idea. I can always buy more if I need to, though.
Anyway, wish us luck! As long as there isn’t any Colonix in the equation, we should be good (OK, that was stretching it a bit far LOL). As long as I survive, I’ll be posting an update on our first day of potty-training tomorrow!

Sounds like a smart plan. I remember when I started potty training Sophia I brought the potty home when she was 18 months and she sat right down and went two times that day and I thought it was going to be a breeze. But, no, it was a up and down cycle for months. Then a month or so after Joshua was born (she was about 2 yrs. 5 mths) she just decided she was ready to go all the time (up until that point she was going in the potty about 60-70% of the time). It was apparent with her that she was making the decision of when she was ready because she knew exactly how to do it for many months before that. Since then she has had very few accidents and even wears regular underwear all night w/o problems. I know with Joshua that I am not going to push potty training so quickly as I did with Sophie because it was just a lot of extra work for me and I think she would have done just as well if I had started her around two years instead.
So, good luck to Ava. I bet that because she is older that she will catch on quickly. Keep us posted on the funny stories that just seem to come with this subject!

Lots of fun times ahead!
Good luck. I hope it goes really smooth for the two of you.

I tried the no pants route and it didn’t even last a couple hours. Sawyer poohed on my white carpet and it was not the pooh you could just pick up and throw out.
I started potty training Sawyer when he was 16 months old and like Sophie, he went in the potty a couple times the first day so I thought training would be easy. Here we are at two years and 10 months and he still isn’t trained. He is mostly potty trained but he refuses to pooh in the toilet. We are waiting for him to make that ‘decision’ that he will only go on the toilet.
Sawyer has been wearing only underwear to daycare for the last 10 months and has never had an accident but he still has quite a few accidents at home. I think there is more pure pressure at daycare for him to stay dry.
Good luck to Ava . . . hopefully it is not too long of a journey.

Best of luck with today’s potty adventure!! I had relatively good success when I went the route of “no pants” (child-not me!!)! We have no carpet so for one day the child was pantsless (try to do this in the summer when it’s warm :-0) and we had LOTS of beverages and grapes and things that contained lots of juice. This allowed for many tries of knowing what was happening and learning to recognize the pending feeling and the outcome. I kept the potty chair close by. Remember to praise her often. Good luck!
