Car Accident Update

We might get out of here by late today or early tomorrow!

The towing ban was lifted this morning and we just got a call from the towing company saying that they’ll tow our van as soon as they get the keys. They’re picking Chad up at our hotel and they’ll let him ride along while they tow it to the mechanic. Hopefully it won’t take long to make it drivable and then when we get home, Chad will use my car for work while our mechanic fixes the rest of the damages.

I’m having quite a bit of anxiety about driving the rest of the way home. This was the first accident I’ve ever been in, so it really freaked me out. Hopefully we can just get home without any more incidents…and believe me, we won’t be traveling in this type of weather again (unless absolutely necessary for some reason).

I’ll keep everyone updated when I’m able!!

Car Accident

If you read my previous posts, you know that we went on a trip up to WI to visit our family last week (no movers or anything…just a vacation!). We started driving home yesterday and hit quite a bit of snow and ice between Cedar Rapids, IA and Des Moines. We saw tons of cars in the ditch (at least 6 or 7 just in the mile before our accident) and I told Chad that I really wanted to get a hotel. But right after that, he lost control of the van. We were right next to a bridge and at first, it looked like we were going to go down into whatever was underneath the bridge, but then we fishtailed onto the bridge, hit the cement barrier on the bridge twice (once in the front, once in the back on the passenger side) and then slid into the ditch on the other side of the bridge.

We were all unhurt, but pretty shaken up (my back hurts, but I’m not sure if that’s from the accident or from being all tensed up). We called 911 and they sent two troopers out who took us to a hotel. Because of the weather, there’s a towing ban out, so we don’t even know when they’ll be able to pull the van out and then they’ll have to fix it, too. So we could be here for awhile. All we know is that the weather is still pretty bad right now.

When the police picked us up, they blocked a lane of traffic and were so worried about other cars hitting their cars that we barely got to take anything with us. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to grab the things we absolutely needed (Kelvin’s amoxicillin for his ear infection, my contact solution and glasses, and the diapers), but we couldn’t bring any clothes with us and they wouldn’t even let Chad go back and lock the van. Hopefully everything will be there when we get the van back!

We’ve still been able to have clean clothes by washing them in shifts (the person who isn’t naked runs the rest of the clothes down to the hotel washing machine and then we switch). Not ideal, but it works! We also grabbed Ava’s DVD’s and Chad’s laptop so that keeps her entertained part of the time. Kelvin’s bored to death, though. He pretty much uses me as his personal jungle gym all day.

Luckily, our insurance company is covering pretty much everything. We have a $500 deductible, but they also pay for all our expenses while we’re here (up to $500), so we definitely come out ahead! They’ll even pay for clothes if we can buy them, but the nearest store is 5 miles away and the roads are too bad to even take a cab. I’m not even sure if they have cabs in this town because it’s so small.

I feel really bad for Ava. Usually in order to sleep, she needs her big pillow, her small pillow (on top of her big pillow, upside down with the tags at the top), her big puppy, her little puppy, her Friend (a beanie baby dinosaur), her Nuk, and two “soft blankets” (the kind with satin on the back). And we have none of it. I handed her her Friend before we got out of the van, but I don’t know if she left it in the van or forgot it in the police car. It’s so sad that she doesn’t have any of her “security items” and is in a strange place on top of it.

Just wanted to let everyone know! I’ll update as I can (and I’m able to update Facebook with my phone pretty regularly).

Right now, I find myself eyeball-deep in the travel preparations again. Let me tell you, those three or four days before a trip are ones I usually want to just block out of my memory. I miss the days when we could just throw some clothes in the suitcase and go. Now I have to pack easily four times as much stuff, which really overwhelms me.

It isn’t actually the stuff that overwhelms me. I’ve packed it countless times before and I have lists that I reuse every time. It’s how to pack it. It seems like I’m always changing my method of packing to make it easier to access everything and save space. This time I’m using more boxes and bins. I’m not sure if it will really save space, but I think it will make it easier to get to stuff, and more importantly, to get the stuff back where it’s supposed to go. You know, instead of all over the van floor. We’ll see.

So far, all I have packed is the diapers, pull-ups and wipes and the snacks. I thought I’d have all afternoon today to get the clothes packed, but I suspect ear infections so we’re off to the doctor. Sigh. Both of the kids have been sleeping horribly the last few nights, Kelvin’s been really fussy, and today Ava told me she has owies in her ears. If they do have ear infections, that’s not something I want to travel with, so I want to get them on some antibiotics (and acidophiles of course) as soon as possible. Hopefully they don’t though…we haven’t had any ear infections in over a year!

So I’d better get myself off the computer and get some packing done before we spend the afternoon at the doctor’s office. I’m hoping to have the majority of the packing done by tonight and then tomorrow we’ll just have to get odds and ends together….plus I’m sure Chad will still have to pack his clothes, computer, x-box (I’m sure he’d bring a wii too if we had one), and the rest of his stuff. Should be interesting!

Brown v Board of Education Pictures

A week or so ago, I wrote about our trip to the Brown v Board of Education Museum. I finally uploaded all the pictures last night, and was a little upset to realize I didn’t get any that really captured the museum. Know what I mean?

This is pretty much the best picture I was able to get:

And yes, Ava did know I was taking her picture…she was just refusing to pose. Kind of going off on a tangent here, but I also realized last night that I don’t have any recent pictures where both kids are looking at the camera with halfway normal faces. Someone is always scowling, looking away, picking their nose, or giving me a cheesy grin. If I can’t even get a decent picture of the kids, how can I ever be expected to find a decent term life insurance rate? Oh well.

There are a few other pictures from the field trip in the kids’ 2010 photobucket (and yes, Sarah, I’m going straight over to put the photobucket link on the sidebar, OK?).

A few weeks ago, Chad decided he was going to start cooking dinner one night a week. This may or may not have been prompted by me telling him that I hate cooking dinner when the kids are around (which is every night). LOL

Last week, he made Parmesan Chicken Bundles, Grilled Red Potatoes and Glazed Baby Carrots. It was so good!

The chicken was pounded out really thin and then rolled up with a spinach, mozzarella, parmesan and cream cheese mixture inside, then dipped in egg and rolled in cracker crumbs. With all that cheese, it was probably horribly fattening, but it was so good, we didn’t care!

The potatoes were good too, but the carrots….I’m not really sure what he put in them, but those were the best carrots I’ve ever had in my life!

If he’s not careful, he’s going to have a new job around here…cooking me dinner every night! I would gladly clean the rugs and other things I normally ask him to do if he would make me those carrots every night!
